What is Herbal Medicine? Get Started With Herbs for Health with Correne Omland from Spirea Herbs

The first of a series with Correne, we talk all about how to get started with herbs for health and wellness.

Herbalism and herbal remedies have a wide range of uses for physical, and emotional, health and wellness!

Correne Omland joins me today as a plant worker, Clinical Herbalist, homesteader, and energy worker, and author, to share her plant wisdom.

Herbs really can be utilized at any age.

They are specifically wonderful in menopause, when stress, digestion, and hormone changes really wreak havoc on our well being.

This episode will:

  • Describe Herbalism, from Correne’s perspective.

  • Share Correne’s story of depression, conventional medicine (which we agree we NEED!) and how herbs were the catalyst that helped her feel alive again.

  • Give a brief introduction to herbs, from a physical and energetic perspective.

  • Teas, capsules or tinctures? What’s best?

  • The simplest way to start.

Coreene is here to take the intimidation of herbs out of your life! Herbs can enhance your life in menopause, which comes with it’s own set of symptoms and changes.

Correne suggests using topical herbal concoctions and teas as a start point in your herbal journey. She talks about the resistance to herbs, because we are trained to look at health from a symptom point of view, rather than root causes.

Her discussion turned to the foundation of digestion and the gut, which is one of the most important things to think about in menopause.

What we ingest is one thing, but what we absorb is KEY.

One of the top complaints in menopause, besides hot flashes, is digestive issues. There are many connections to the gut, the digestive system. How can we drive our body systems properly, when we are not absorbing nutrients? Our digestive capacity changes in menopause, with lower stomach acid, increased stress and a changing microbiome.

Every system in the body depends on each other.

And we depend on plants, as humans. We need them, for food, for air, and for beauty.
