Does Social Media Negatively Affect Your Body Image in Menopause?

Have you ever though about how social media influences how you think of yourself in menopause?

Does it create a negative body image for you, or bring up that feeling of FOMO, the Fear of Missing Out, when it comes to having a smaller body?

The concept of FOMO isn't limited to Pinterest-y kitchens and fashion trends. The diet industry can have us feeling like we're missing out if we don't make our bodies fit into societal standards.

These "standards" do not work for aging, changing women, who try to eat the "right" things and stay active.

Take a social media detox.

Getting off your phone and laptop, deleting your apps, getting outside, and setting timers for how long you spend on Facebook or Instagram, are all ways to “detox” from social media.

This IS an amazing ADD IN tactic for your overall health.

What about what you consume on social media? What I mean is: WHO, or WHAT, do you follow on social media?

This short episode and blog post will help you:

  • Understand the WHY behind some of the accounts you follow.

  • Decide if they align with what is realistic for you.

  • Decide what to follow for inspiration that isn’t shaming.

  • Choose what to follow for fun, and entertainment, and what to follow for attainable, weight inclusive health.

Did you know that body Image issues increase in menopause? Following certain body types on social media channels can influence how we feel about ourselves. Who we follow on social media may not support a positive body image as we age. Feeling good about your body is part of a healthy menopause!

Where can you start to assess your social media feed?

Start by picking three of the top accounts you follow. Write down why you follow them.

Write down how you feel when you leave their feed. Inspired, motivated? WHY? Are you motivated to try extreme things to shrink your body? Do you feel like it’s your fault, and you could do “better” if you just did the things listed?

Do these accounts align with those Core Values you created in this episode: Is Doing Too Much Preventing you From Reaching Your Goals?

That episode may help you create space to discover your core values.

If the things you follow make you feel LESS THAN THE GREAT HUMAN YOU ARE, it’t time to UNFOLLOW.
